Canada Hosts Ultimate Endurance Test as Swedish Armed Forces Win Subaru Adventure Racing World Championship in Penticton
Canada recently hosted the ultimate endurance test as the Subaru Adventure Racing World Championship unfolded in Penticton, British Columbia. Teams from 26 countries battled through the rugged terrain of the Okanagan region, testing their physical and mental limits across cycling, trekking, and rafting stages. In the end, the Swedish Armed Forces Adventure Team triumphed, claiming their third World Championship title after completing the course in an impressive 116 hours and 6 minutes. Their victory in this grueling event underscores the demanding nature of the competition and highlights Canada’s role as the perfect backdrop for one of the world’s toughest endurance races.
The victorious team claimed the title of World Champions for the third time, completing the demanding course in an astonishing 116 hours and 6 minutes. Their victory was a result of their exceptional teamwork and perseverance through grueling stages that included cycling, trekking, rafting, and paddling. The final team to cross the finish line completed the race in 217 hours, 20 minutes, and 45 seconds, demonstrating the immense mental fortitude and stamina required to complete the race.
Leading up to the race, the course details remained a mystery, with teams receiving the full itinerary only the day before the competition began. The race kicked off in Pemberton, with participants embarking on a seven-hour bus journey to reach the starting point. The first stage tested teams on world-class single-track bike trails, followed by a trek through glacial alpine terrain. The most challenging stages came in the form of an 80-kilometer pack-raft journey across Carpenter and Seton Lakes, concluding with a thrilling whitewater descent.
Participants also encountered high-water rapids on both the Thompson and Nahatlatch rivers, where navigating the water proved to be a true test of skill and coordination. Along the route, teams passed through picturesque landscapes, stopping at locations such as the Historic Hat Creek Ranch, where they were tasked with planting trees. In addition, the race journeyed through the lands of five Indigenous peoples, highlighting the cultural significance of the region.
The most physically demanding stage was a 62-kilometer alpine trek, where teams were required to bushwhack through thick forests at a pace of just 1 km per hour. This was followed by a rope descent down the granite face of Vicuna Peak. Some teams battled harsh weather conditions, taking up to 48 hours to complete this stage, while others were fortunate enough to experience clear skies and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
The final stage of the race brought teams across Okanagan Lake, where they paddled in Canadian canoes back to the finish line in Penticton, passing the historic paddle steamer, the S.S. Sicamous. As the race drew to a close, the Swedish Armed Forces Adventure Team claimed the victory after pulling ahead in the final stages, securing their third World Championship title.
The second and third places were claimed by the Estonian ACE Adventure/La Sportiva team and the defending champions, 400team LSN from France. Teams from New Zealand and the United States rounded out the top five, highlighting the international representation in the race. The competition also saw teams from 13 countries finish within the top 20, further cementing the global reach of adventure racing.
The Subaru Canada Adventure Racing World Championship was not only about the race itself but also about the community that forms around it. Volunteers from across the world came together to help organize and support the event, and the International Adventure Racing Conference, held after the competition, provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on their experiences and connect with others in the adventure racing community.
The event was also a showcase of the power of teamwork, as many teams shared stories of resilience in the face of adversity. From encounters with wildlife like bears and bald eagles to sleeping in caves when lost, participants demonstrated the indomitable spirit required to complete such a challenging race. Teams experienced mechanical failures, including broken bikes, but continued to push forward, with some even towing their bikes through the night to stay in the race.
Ultimately, 39 of the 56 teams that started the race completed the full course, with many opting to skip certain checkpoints in order to finish within the time limit. Although six teams were forced to withdraw, the event demonstrated the strength of the human spirit and the power of collaboration in overcoming even the most difficult obstacles.
